Program Notes
LOVE
The "Septimal Suite" was written for Louie Swalby.
His responses to my many changes and dark music led me to write this suite to counter.
I chose septimal intervals because of my fascination with their eeriness,
which then counters the simplicity of the pieces' folk/classical-like structures.
DREAM
"Kotoling" was originally meant for suling and koto.
I had used the original gamelan tuning that is pentatonic.
this is a close approximation of the tuning to the Xiao flute made by Ying Meng Zhing.
"Melody of Midnight" is from a dream I had.
In my dream there was a melody playing somewhere in the depths of a foggy swamp.
(swamp effects left to the imagination)
LOGIC
"f(x)" is a short name for f(x) = xn+x1 where xn is a melodic series,
or more acurately a pattern divided into a series.
It's a fractal. It represents itself throughout it's modifications from a larger form to a smaller form.
This is similar to a shoreline getting a similar line form from afar as it is closer.
DECEIT
"Black Widow" is a complete rewrite of "Benandanti" performed by the "Saint Helens Quartet".
The original idea for this piece was about the ghosts that haunt me.
Not wanting anyone to know this, I wouldn't come up with a good name.
Phillip Bernhardt-House came up with "Benandanti",
The Good people fighting Bad Witches at night while leaving their body asleep.
I changed the name to "Black Widow" finally to represent all the 'dead' relationships left behind.
The deceit is ourselves, for the dead still walk with us.
"Black Widow" is dedicated to 'Paganism' because of the enchantment, eeriness, and thrill of the unknown
(that can only be understood through Pagan ideas or through ideas
not labeled Pagan but seem to hold similar aspects, including reiki,
and other natural uses of energy given from the planet).
"Cat and Mouse" was orignally meant about a cat and a bird.
A cat stalks a bird to get it out of it's cage.
Suddenly the chase begins and the bird evades the cat. More stalking and finally,
the cat kills the prized bird.
The owner receives the cat's prize as a gift, and no longer can the cat be so happy.
DEATH
"Hereafter", is a very personal piece. I still mourne the loss of my partner. I believe I always will.
"Finallity" is about just that. The thought of everything ending is just as scary as it is exciting.
But, really, nothing is final, it just transforms.
